The Sickle Cell Disease Parent Support Group (SCDPSG) working closely with the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario and the Ottawa Hospital is proud to present the 'SICK' of It!: Living WELL with Sickle Cell 2010 Conference and GALA Event. The 1.5 day educational conference and Friday evening GALA event target an audience of both pediatric and adult patients, their family members and healthcare professionals and are offered to a wide geographical population spanning all of Ontario, Western Quebec and across Canada. The conference, held in the heart of downtown Ottawa at the Westin Hotel, is open to anyone (over the age of 12) who is interested in learning more about sickle cell disease. Join us at our special GALA event for a memorable evening out at the National Art Centre, from the Westin just a short walk across the historic Rideau Canal.

Friday, October 15th is open to professionals in healthcare, education and community organizations with the focus on the recent advances in clinical treatments and state-of-the-art research allowing sickle cell patients to lead healthy and successful lives. Up-dates on newborn screening, living well in the adult world and pain management are keynote presentations.

Saturday, October 16th open to all, enjoys all the same topics as Friday's session but is geared towards patients, family and support team members with the focus on addressing immediate and long term needs of patients living with sickle cell disease. Additional workshops in the afternoon allow attendees to gain new information on pediatric and adult care, financial, employment, educational and neuropsychological issues.

OCTOBER 15TH – GALA EVENT
2010 marks a historical landmark for sickle cell disease as the first sickle cell patient was diagnosed in June of 1910. The timeline from 1910 to present is a journey we hope to commemorate at this GALA event. We are honoured to provide an amazing line-up of individuals who live WELL with sickle cell disease and who despite their disease, have found the motivation, strength and support to follow their artistic passions. Join us as we celebrate the connection they share as they: LIVE WELL WITH SICKLE CELL!

We hope the 2010 conference and GALA event will establish and nurture working partnerships between sickle cell patients, healthcare professionals and community organizations and trigger actions to increase staffing in hematology programs, motivate patients/families to be proactive in self-education and self-management, dispel myths surrounding sickle cell disease enabling patients and their families to establish open and practical dialogue with support personnel and the community at large.

We look forward to meeting you at the conference, celebrating with you at the GALA event and Facing Sickle Cell disease TOGETHER!
